MONTGOMERY, AL (BuzzReport) – A federal court has delivered a definitive ruling, declaring Alabama’s 2023 congressional map unconstitutional and permanently barring its use in any future elections. In a landmark decision filed today, the court robustly asserted that the Republican-drawn map violates voting rights and fails to provide fair representation for Black voters in the state.

This decisive action immediately blocks Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen from holding any elections using the invalidated 2023 map. Instead, the court has mandated the immediate implementation of “Special Master Remedial Plan 3,” a new congressional district map drawn under rigorous court supervision. This court-ordered map will now serve as Alabama’s official electoral blueprint.

The ruling is a significant victory for voting rights advocates who argued that the 2023 map illegally diluted the electoral power of Black voters, despite their substantial numbers in the state. The federal judges unequivocally stated that the map’s configuration did not adequately reflect the demographic realities and electoral potential of Alabama’s Black population, thereby undermining their constitutional right to fair representation.

“Special Master Remedial Plan 3” is now the law of the land for Alabama’s congressional elections. It will remain in effect for all upcoming electoral cycles until the state is required to draw a fresh map based on the results of the 2030 Census. At that point, the court’s current order will expire, allowing Alabama to undertake a new redistricting process, which will presumably be subject to intense scrutiny to ensure compliance with federal voting rights protections.

This permanent injunction marks a critical moment for fair elections in Alabama, ensuring that voters will cast their ballots under a map designed to promote equitable representation rather than partisan advantage.
