Montgomery, AL (BuzzReport) – Democratic State Representative Phillip Ensler has announced he will not seek reelection to the Alabama State House in 2026, citing a desire to return to his native New York City to be closer to family. Ensler, who represents District 74, made the announcement recently, marking the upcoming 2026 election cycle as one in which his seat will be open for new candidates. “After tremendous consideration, I have decided not to seek reelection to the Alabama State House of Representatives next year,” Ensler stated. “Words cannot express how grateful I am for all who have supported me and our work. I thank each of you for your belief in a better Alabama for all.” During his tenure, Ensler has been a vocal advocate for progressive policies, focusing on key community issues. He highlighted some of his legislative efforts, noting, “Together, we have advanced solutions to address real issues, including efforts to reduce gun violence, expand mental health services, support public education, and much more.” Ensler affirmed his commitment to serving out his current term, which concludes in 2026. Following that, he plans to relocate. “I remain committed to serving District 74 through the end of my term in 2026, and then I plan to return to my native New York City, where I will be closer to family,” he said. Since moving to Montgomery in 2012, Ensler has been an active member of the community in various capacities. His past roles include serving as a Teach for America educator at Lee High School, a civil rights attorney, and a Senior Policy Advisor for the City of Montgomery. “Throughout my time in these roles, I developed deep and lasting bonds across our community,” Ensler reflected. “These friendships continue to inspire me, and I look forward to sustaining these lifelong relationships.” Despite his planned move, Ensler stated his intention to continue his popular annual college, career, and cultural exposure trips to New York City and Washington, D.C., for Alabama public school students. Ensler’s departure will create a significant opening in District 74, which is considered a reliably left-leaning Democratic seat. Political observers anticipate a robust field of candidates will emerge to compete for the seat in the lead-up to the 2026 elections. Concluding his statement, Ensler expressed a enduring commitment to broader causes: “No matter where I live, I will always be committed to fighting for a more inclusive, safe, prosperous, and loving world for all.” Share this:Tweet Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window) Email Share on Threads (Opens in new window) Threads Share on Bluesky (Opens in new window) Bluesky Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window) WhatsApp Share on Nextdoor (Opens in new window) Nextdoor Like this:Like Loading...
