MOBILE, AL (BuzzReport) — The Archdiocese of Mobile officially unveiled its new spiritual leader Tuesday morning, as the Vatican formally appointed Reverend Mark S. Rivituso as the Archbishop-Designate. Rivituso is set to become the tenth bishop and third archbishop to guide the Catholic community of Mobile, signaling a significant transition for the diocese.

The announcement was made during a press conference held by the Archdiocese, where current Mobile Archbishop Thomas Rodi introduced his successor. Archbishop Rodi, who announced his retirement more than a year ago upon reaching the canonical age of 75, expressed strong support for the incoming leader.

“I feel certain that we will soon grow in affection and respect for [Rev. Rivituso],” Archbishop Rodi stated, underscoring the anticipation for the new Archbishop-Designate’s arrival and the beginning of his stewardship.

Reverend Rivituso, present at the press conference, shared his initial thoughts and vision for his new role. His remarks centered on the profound responsibility and opportunity inherent in serving the faithful. “Every time I have an opportunity to truly serve others, that’s always a blessing and this is a wonderful opportunity with the Catholic-faith community, and other partners of goodwill, that I hope to work together for the greater good of others,” Rev. Rivituso articulated, highlighting a commitment to collaborative community engagement beyond the immediate Catholic sphere.

The formal appointment, made by the Holy See earlier Tuesday morning, marks the culmination of a period of discernment for the Vatican in selecting new leadership for the Mobile Archdiocese.

According to a news release from the Archdiocese, Archbishop-Designate Rivituso’s installation will be a momentous occasion, presided over by the Papal Nuncio to the United States, Cardinal Christophe Pierre. While specific dates and the venue for the installation Mass remain to be finalized, it is anticipated to occur within approximately two months.

Archbishop Rodi’s retirement, mandated by Church Law upon reaching the age of 75, had been pending a new appointment by the Vatican, ensuring a seamless transition of leadership for the vibrant Catholic community in Mobile. The appointment of Archbishop-Designate Rivituso ushers in a fresh chapter for the Archdiocese, promising continued spiritual growth and service under his guidance.
