Fairhope, AL (BuzzReport) – A Fairhope man is in custody at the Baldwin County Jail, charged with murder and attempted murder following a domestic incident Saturday night that left one person dead and another seriously injured.

Baldwin County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a residence on Dominion Drive, located outside the city limits of Fairhope, around 11:00 PM Saturday in response to a reported disturbance. Upon arrival, deputies discovered two residents of the home suffering from severe injuries. Both victims were airlifted to a hospital in Pensacola for treatment. Tragically, one of the victims succumbed to their injuries, while the other remains under medical care.

Authorities have identified the suspect as 38-year-old Ryan Smith, who reportedly fled the scene before deputies arrived.

A subsequent search led deputies to Smith’s vehicle on Interstate 65 in North Baldwin County. Deputies initiated a pursuit that extended into Escambia County, Alabama. The chase concluded when deputies successfully deployed the Grappler system, a vehicle-stopping device mounted on the front bumper of their patrol car, bringing Smith’s vehicle to a halt.

Smith was taken into custody and is currently being held in the Baldwin County Jail.

While the news release did not identify the victims involved, a Sheriff’s Office spokesperson stated that the cause of death is being withheld pending the results of an autopsy. However, they clarified that the victims were not shot.

The nature of the relationship between Smith and the victims remains unclear. The Sheriff’s Office described the incident as a “domestic situation,” suggesting a possible connection between the individuals involved.
