JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (BuzzReport) — They say not all heroes wear capes, and that is exactly the case with Cornelius Rainey. The people he helped save from a burning apartment complex in Hyde Park on Wednesday night agree.

On the night of June 4, while visiting family at the Riverbank Apartments, Rainey’s evening took an unexpected turn. Shortly after arriving, he detected a foul odor and noticed smoke billowing from the building. Realizing that something was wrong, he swiftly raced towards the source of the smoke, where he discovered flames engulfing several units.

“It was chaos, people were panicking and running down the stairs,” said Rainey, who works as a landscape supervisor. With little time to think, he sprang into action. He began banging on doors, alerting residents of the imminent danger. “I could hear some people inside, and I knew I had to help get them out,” he stated.

Rainey’s quick thinking and bravery made a critical difference. Once alerted, residents quickly evacuated the building, many just managing to grab their essentials before escaping into the night. Eyewitnesses reported seeing Rainey directing people to safety, ensuring that no one was left behind.

“I don’t consider myself a hero,” Rainey humbly stated. “I just did what anyone else would do in that situation.” However, his actions certainly qualify him as one in the eyes of many residents who owe their safety to his intervention.

Fire crews arrived shortly after the alarm was raised and successfully extinguished the fire, which authorities believe may have originated in one of the kitchen areas. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and everyone managed to escape the flames, thanks in large part to Rainey’s timely response.

Fire Chief Lisa Thornton commended Rainey for his courageous acts. “His immediate response potentially saved lives,” she said at a press conference. “It’s people like him who remind us of the courage that exists within our community. We are grateful that there were no injuries.”

As the residents watched their homes disintegrate into smoke and ash, they also recognized the profound spirit of community that such emergencies often evoke. “We’re all neighbors here, and it’s heartwarming to see someone put themselves at risk to help others,” said Michelle Rivera, a resident whose apartment was damaged in the fire.

In the aftermath of the incident, local organizations have begun to gather donations to assist the families displaced by the fire. Rainey, meanwhile, remains grateful for the safety of everyone involved.

“I just did what had to be done, but it’s really a community effort. We’re all here for each other,” he said.
