Eight Mile, AL – A tragic incident occurred on Sunday evening in Eight Mile, resulting in the death of a local man. According to the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO), deputies responded to a call reporting a shooting at 4071 East Markris Circle at approximately 7:35 p.m.

Upon arrival, authorities found James Suggs, 57, of Mobile, Alabama, suffering from a gunshot wound to the neck in his front yard. Despite efforts to save him, Suggs was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

An investigation conducted by MCSO identified the suspects as brothers Austin Wheat-Payne and James Wheat-Payne. Witnesses at the scene provided crucial information that led to the identification and subsequent arrest of the brothers.

After fleeing the scene, the Wheat-Payne brothers drove to Blount High School, where Austin Wheat-Payne called 911. The Prichard Police Department responded and detained both individuals until MCSO deputies arrived to take them into custody. A firearm believed to have been used in the shooting was recovered from the vehicle occupied by the brothers.

The Mobile County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting. No further information has been released regarding the motive behind the incident or potential charges against the suspects.
