Montgomery, AL – A quick move to fill an open justice seat on the Supreme Court. Governor Kay Ivey announced the appointment of Judge Bill Lewis to the Supreme Court of Alabama, effective immediately. This decision comes after Justice Jay Mitchell’s resignation from the state’s top court was announced yesterday.

Judge Lewis brings decades of experience to the role, having served in various positions within Alabama’s judicial system. Most recently, Lewis was appointed to the Alabama Court of Civil Appeals by Governor Ivey in February 2024. Prior to this role, he served as a circuit court judge for the 19th Judicial Circuit in Elmore County, where he held the position of presiding judge.

Lewis’ background also includes experience as the senior partner of the Lewis Law Firm, which he founded in 2006. Additionally, he has served as an assistant district attorney for the 19th Judicial Circuit and has practiced law in various areas, including criminal defense, civil law, and family law.

A graduate of the University of the South and the Cumberland School of Law, Lewis is well-qualified for his new role, according to Governor Ivey. “Judge Bill Lewis continues demonstrating justice and fairness under the law, as well as a willingness to serve the people of Alabama,” Ivey said. “His decades of experience will serve the Supreme Court of Alabama well, and I am confident he is the best choice.”

Governor Ivey’s appointment to fill Lewis’ vacant seat on the Court of Civil Appeals will be announced soon.
