Eight Mile, AL. (BuzzReport) – A crowd gathered at Destiny Vision Christian Church in Eight Mile on Wednesday evening to attend the Prichard Mayoral Forum, hosted by Port City Unplugged and Destiny Vision Christian Church. Three candidates vying for the mayoral seat, Carletta Davis, Rodney Clements, and Terrance Harris, took the stage to share their ideas and solutions to pressing issues facing the city. The nearly two-hour forum provided a platform for the candidates to articulate their positions on key issues, including public safety, water service, economic development, and sustainability. Each candidate spoke passionately, seeking the support and votes of Prichard citizens. On water and sewer issues, the candidates presented differing approaches. Rodney Clements advocated for the city to take control of the water system, while Carletta Davis proposed restructuring the water and sewer board, stating she would “fight to get it changed.” Terrance Harris emphasized the need for a team effort to address the issue. The candidates also tackled the topic of high water bills. Carletta Davis suggested sourcing the city’s own water from existing wells to lower costs, while Terrance Harris proposed simply reducing water bills. Rodney Clements focused on introducing legislation and city ordinances to help lower bills and fix the system. Public safety and crime prevention were also high on the agenda. Rodney Clements highlighted the need for crime prevention programs, proper funding for the police department, and statistics-driven approaches to address youth involvement in crime. Carletta Davis emphasized attracting good talent to the police department, increasing police visibility, and collaborating with the school district to implement youth programs. Terrance Harris did not provide detailed solutions on this topic. On sustainability, the candidates prioritized different areas. Terrance Harris focused on the water department and public safety, while Rodney Clements emphasized the water department and city ordinances to protect the city. Carletta Davis discussed climate change, supporting homeowners with weatherization, and community development. When asked about attracting businesses and jobs, the candidates agreed on the need for a business-friendly environment. Terrance Harris suggested tax credits for new businesses, while Rodney Clements and Carletta Davis emphasized streamlining city processes and comparing business fees to surrounding cities. In their closing statements, each candidate made their case for why citizens should vote for them. Terrance Harris promised to make Prichard a better city to live in, support the police department, and address blight. Carletta Davis emphasized her commitment to the people of Prichard. Notably, incumbent Mayor Jimmie Gardner, Anthony Clarkbanks, and former City Council member and mayoral candidate Lorenzo Martin did not attend the forum. The citizens of Prichard will now have the opportunity to consider the candidates’ positions as they head to the polls in August.
