MOBILE, Ala. (BuzzReport) — A dangerous combination of extreme heat and strenuous outdoor labor sent multiple construction workers to the ground Wednesday afternoon at a construction site on Water Street in downtown Mobile, prompting a large emergency response from Mobile Fire-Rescue Department personnel.

According to Mobile Fire-Rescue, eight to nine construction workers were found lying on the ground after suffering from what officials believe to be heat exhaustion while working at the site.

Emergency crews quickly arrived and began evaluating the workers. Officials confirmed that five people were transported to a local hospital for further treatment. The conditions of those transported have not yet been released.

The incident comes as dangerous heat continues to grip southwest Alabama. High temperatures combined with oppressive humidity have pushed heat index values well above 100 degrees, creating hazardous conditions for anyone working or spending extended periods outdoors.

First responders remained at the construction site for some time as they assessed the remaining workers, provided medical care, and ensured no additional heat-related emergencies developed.

Occupational heat illnesses can escalate rapidly, especially during prolonged physical activity. Heat exhaustion is characterized by symptoms including heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea, headache, muscle cramps, and fainting. Without immediate treatment, it can progress to the far more serious condition of heat stroke, which is considered a medical emergency.

Officials continue to urge employers and workers to take extra precautions during periods of extreme heat by staying hydrated, taking frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas, and recognizing the early warning signs of heat-related illness.
