MOBILE, AL (BuzzReport) — Mobile County is mourning the loss of former Sheriff Sam Cochran, a longtime law enforcement leader whose nearly five decades of public service helped shape policing in South Alabama and left a lasting impact on generations of officers. In a statement released Tuesday, the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office announced Cochran’s passing, calling him a dedicated public servant whose leadership, integrity, and commitment to protecting the community earned the respect of law enforcement agencies and citizens across Alabama. Cochran devoted 48 years to law enforcement, serving Mobile County with what colleagues described as unwavering dedication and compassion. After being elected sheriff in 2006, he went on to win four consecutive terms, leading the Sheriff’s Office until his retirement in January 2023. Throughout his tenure, Cochran oversaw significant changes within the department, emphasizing modernization, professionalism, and stronger partnerships with local communities. Fellow officers say he believed law enforcement was about more than making arrests—it was about building trust, solving problems, and creating safer neighborhoods for everyone. One of the defining accomplishments of his career was his leadership in combating Alabama’s methamphetamine crisis. Cochran was a strong advocate for tighter controls on the sale of pseudoephedrine, a key ingredient used in the production of methamphetamine. His efforts helped pave the way for Alabama’s electronic tracking system for pseudoephedrine purchases, a measure credited with dramatically reducing the number of clandestine meth labs operating across the state and improving public safety for countless families. Beyond policy and enforcement, Cochran became known as a mentor who invested heavily in the next generation of law enforcement leaders. Deputies, investigators, supervisors, and command staff who worked under him often credited his guidance and leadership as instrumental in their careers. Many of those officers now serve in leadership positions throughout the region, continuing the values he championed. Current Mobile County Sheriff Paul Burch reflected on Cochran’s influence, saying he had the privilege of serving under him for more than three decades. “Having worked with him in various capacities for over thirty years, he was not only a mentor but a friend who deeply influenced my career,” Burch said. “Sheriff Cochran took great pride in developing and nurturing future leaders in law enforcement. I will deeply miss his friendship, as well as the ability to call him for advice or to bounce ideas off of him. I often told people that Sam Cochran was one of the smartest law enforcement officers I’ve ever known, and one of the best politicians Mobile has ever had.” Those who served alongside Cochran remember him as a leader who expected excellence while treating others with dignity and respect. Friends and colleagues described him as humble, approachable, and always willing to listen before making decisions. The Mobile County Sheriff’s Office extended its condolences to the Cochran family, asking the community to keep them in their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. While Sheriff Sam Cochran’s watch has come to an end, his influence on Mobile County law enforcement—and the lives of the officers he mentored—will continue for years to come. His legacy of service, leadership, and commitment to protecting the people of Mobile County will remain an enduring part of the community he faithfully served.
