BREWTON, AL (BuzzReport)— A shooting has left a Brewton family mourning after a 15-year-old girl was killed Tuesday evening, leading to the arrest of a man now facing a reckless murder charge.

According to the Brewton Police Department, officers responded to a residence on Evergreen Avenue at approximately 7:00 p.m. after receiving reports of a person who had been shot.

When officers arrived, they discovered 15-year-old Alexa Marky suffering from a gunshot wound to the neck. Despite emergency response efforts, Alexa died from her injuries.

Authorities have arrested William Sanders, who has been charged with reckless murder in connection with the fatal shooting. Investigators have not yet released Sanders’ age or explained the circumstances that led to the shooting.

Police have also not indicated whether Sanders and the victim knew one another or whether additional charges could be filed as the investigation continues.

A reckless murder charge in Alabama generally alleges that a person’s conduct demonstrated an extreme indifference to human life, resulting in another person’s death. The charge is one of the state’s most serious felony offenses and carries the possibility of severe prison time if a conviction is obtained.

The Brewton Police Department has not released additional details regarding the weapon involved or the events leading up to the shooting. Officials say the investigation remains active.
