HATTIESBURG, Miss. (BuzzReport News) — Authorities are searching for a driver who fled the scene after a crash that knocked out power to homes and businesses in Hattiesburg on Sunday afternoon.

According to the Hattiesburg Police Department, officers and emergency responders were dispatched at approximately 3:26 p.m. on June 21, 2026, to the area near the intersection of West 7th Street and Main Street following reports of a serious single-vehicle accident.

Investigators say a vehicle slammed into a utility pole, causing extensive damage and triggering a temporary power outage that affected nearby residents and commercial properties. The impact was powerful enough to leave the utility infrastructure damaged, prompting crews to respond and work to restore electrical service to the area.

However, when law enforcement arrived at the scene, the driver was nowhere to be found.

Police said the driver, described as a Hispanic male, fled the area before officers could make contact. Authorities immediately launched a search of the surrounding neighborhood, but the suspect was not located.

The hit-and-run has raised concerns among residents, not only because of the property damage and power disruption but also because fleeing the scene of an accident can delay emergency response efforts and complicate investigations.

Officials have not released information regarding the vehicle involved or whether the driver sustained injuries during the collision. Investigators are now reviewing available evidence and pursuing leads to identify and locate the individual responsible.

The Hattiesburg Police Department continues to investigate and is asking for the public’s assistance. Anyone who witnessed the crash or has information about the identity or whereabouts of the driver is encouraged to come forward.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the Hattiesburg Police Department at 601-544-7900 or submit anonymous tips through Metro Crime Stoppers by dialing TIPS.

As investigators work to track down the driver, authorities are reminding motorists that remaining at the scene of a crash is not only the law but also a critical responsibility that helps protect public safety and ensures accountability.

This remains a developing story. BuzzReport News will provide updates as additional information becomes available.
