Two Men Charged After Violent Assault Near Thad Cochran Lock and Dam Spillway in Mississippi

MONROE COUNTY, Miss. (BuzzReport) — Two men have been arrested and charged following a violent late-night assault that left one man seriously injured near the Thad Cochran Lock and Dam Spillway west of Amory, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities say deputies were dispatched shortly after 10 p.m. on May 30 after Monroe County E-911 received reports of a physical altercation taking place on a levee road in the area of the spillway.

When deputies arrived at the scene, they discovered an adult white male lying on the ground suffering from injuries severe enough to require immediate medical attention. Emergency responders treated the victim before transporting him to North Mississippi Medical Center in Amory. Due to the seriousness of his injuries, he was later transferred to a trauma center in Tupelo for advanced treatment.

Following an initial investigation, deputies arrested Austin Boyd Funderburk, 28, at the scene on an outstanding warrant. Investigators later charged Funderburk with aggravated assault in connection with the incident.

Authorities also identified a second suspect, Jason Jonathan Armstrong, 50, who was subsequently taken into custody and charged with conspiracy to commit assault.

According to court records, Monroe County Justice Court set bond for Funderburk at $7,500, while Armstrong’s bond was set at $10,000.

Investigators have not released additional details regarding what led to the altercation or the extent of the victim’s injuries. However, officials emphasized that the case remains under active investigation and warned that additional charges could be filed as investigators continue gathering evidence and conducting interviews.
