MOBILE, Ala. (Birmingham, AL) — Traffic along the Interstate 10 Bayway came to a standstill today after an injured longhorn was discovered lying in the roadway, prompting an emergency response and rescue operation. Authorities say the large cattle is believed to have fallen from a moving livestock trailer while traveling across the heavily traveled stretch of interstate connecting Mobile and Baldwin counties. The animal suffered injuries severe enough to prevent it from standing, creating a hazardous situation for both motorists and the longhorn itself. Witnesses reported seeing the animal lying in the roadway as traffic quickly backed up in both directions. Emergency crews, law enforcement officers, and animal rescue personnel responded to the scene to secure the area and prevent additional accidents. Officials temporarily halted traffic while responders worked to assess the longhorn’s condition and determine the safest way to remove the injured animal from the interstate. The unusual incident drew the attention of hundreds of motorists, many of whom were caught in lengthy delays as crews worked carefully around the distressed animal. The Bayway, one of the Gulf Coast’s busiest transportation corridors, is not designed to accommodate livestock emergencies, making the rescue operation particularly challenging. Responders were forced to balance public safety concerns with efforts to provide aid to the injured longhorn. At this time, authorities have not released details regarding the owner of the cattle or confirmed exactly how the animal fell from the trailer. Investigators are expected to review the circumstances surrounding the incident, including whether the livestock trailer was properly secured. It is stated that the owner was traveling back from Lucedale, MS to Magnolia Springs from a vet with the longhorn. Animal welfare personnel remained on scene evaluating the longhorn’s injuries. The extent of those injuries has not yet been disclosed, but officials indicated the animal was unable to stand on its own following the fall. Motorists traveling through the area were urged to seek alternate routes and expect significant delays while the rescue operation continued. The incident serves as a reminder of the dangers posed when livestock transport vehicles experience equipment failures or unsecured loads, especially on high-speed interstate highways where sudden roadway obstructions can quickly become life-threatening. No human injuries were reported as a result of the incident. The condition of the longhorn and the outcome of rescue efforts were not immediately known.
