WASHINGTON COUNTY, Ala. (BuzzReport) — A tragic two-vehicle crash in Washington County on Sunday evening claimed the life of a Jackson man and left another driver seriously injured, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA).

Authorities identified the victim as Tha’one S. Johnson, 32, of Jackson, who was killed when the vehicle he was driving collided head-on with a pickup truck along Alabama Highway 17.

According to ALEA, the crash occurred at approximately 5:15 p.m. Sunday on Alabama 17 near the 55-mile marker, roughly three miles south of the Chatom city limits.

Investigators said Johnson was operating a 2010 Ford Mustang when it collided head-on with a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Caleb B. Davis, 20, of Tibbie.

The impact of the collision was severe. Johnson suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Davis was also injured in the crash and was transported to University Hospital in Mobile for treatment. Authorities have not released information regarding the extent of his injuries.

The fatal crash temporarily drew a significant emergency response to the rural stretch of highway as first responders worked the scene and investigators began gathering evidence to determine what caused the collision.

At this time, officials have not released details regarding the circumstances leading up to the crash, including whether speed, impairment, distracted driving, or other contributing factors may have played a role.

Troopers with ALEA’s Highway Patrol Division are continuing to investigate the incident. The findings of that investigation are expected to determine the sequence of events that led to the deadly head-on collision.

The crash marks another fatality on Alabama roadways and serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with head-on collisions, which are among the most deadly types of traffic accidents due to the force of impact involved.

Anyone with information that may assist investigators is encouraged to contact law enforcement authorities.
