Semmes, Ala. (BuzzReport) — The Alabama High School Athletic Association has handed down serious penalties against Mary G. Montgomery High School after determining the school violated state athletic recruiting rules, according to an official AHSAA release. The ruling stems from a violation of AHSAA Rule VI, Administration, Section 12 — the association’s recruiting policy, which prohibits improper recruiting of student-athletes. According to the AHSAA, Mary G. Montgomery High School self-reported the violation, prompting an investigation that ultimately resulted in disciplinary action against the school. As part of the punishment, the school has been fined and placed on probation by the state athletic governing body. In addition, any student-athletes determined to have been involved in the violation have been declared permanently ineligible to participate in sports at Mary G. Montgomery High School. However, the AHSAA stated those students would still be eligible to compete athletically within the school district where their family legally resides. The decision marks a significant development for one of Mobile County’s well-known athletic programs and sends a strong warning to schools statewide about the consequences of violating recruiting policies designed to maintain fairness and integrity in high school athletics. AHSAA Executive Director Heath Harmon praised the school administration for cooperating with investigators and reporting the issue. “We appreciate the administration for investigating and reporting this violation,” Harmon said in the release. The AHSAA did not publicly disclose specific details regarding the nature of the recruiting violation, including how many students may have been affected or which athletic programs were involved. Recruiting violations at the high school level can carry severe consequences under AHSAA rules, especially in cases where athletes are improperly encouraged to transfer schools for athletic purposes. The association has long maintained strict regulations intended to prevent unfair competitive advantages and preserve balance among member schools. The probation status now places Mary G. Montgomery High School under increased scrutiny moving forward, while the sanctions could also impact the school’s athletic reputation throughout the state. School officials have not publicly commented further on the disciplinary action.
