Mobile, AL (BuzzReport)— An explosive device discovered underwater at the Big Creek Lake dam was safely detonated after a coordinated response involving federal, state, and local authorities, according to the Mobile Area Water and Sewer System.

Officials said the device, described as a grenade-type improvised explosive device (IED), was located by divers conducting routine maintenance operations in the area. The discovery immediately prompted safety protocols and notification of multiple law enforcement and emergency response agencies.

Authorities secured the scene while bomb technicians evaluated the device and developed a plan for disposal. Officials confirmed the explosive was successfully detonated without incident, and no injuries were reported.

The discovery raised concerns due to the critical importance of Big Creek Lake, which serves as a major water source for residents in the Mobile area. Officials have not released details regarding how long the device may have been underwater or how it ended up near the dam.

The Mobile Area Water and Sewer System stated that the incident remains under investigation and that additional security measures are being planned for the area moving forward. Those measures are expected to include increased monitoring and enhanced protection around critical infrastructure sites connected to the region’s water supply.

Authorities have not announced any arrests or identified any suspects connected to the device. Investigators are continuing efforts to determine the origin of the explosive and whether it posed any immediate threat to public safety or the water system.
