NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BuzzReport) — Tensions are escalating inside the Tennessee State Capitol after Republican lawmakers removed Democratic members from House committees following protests over newly approved legislative maps that critics say weaken Black political representation across the state. The move has ignited fierce backlash from civil rights advocates and Democratic lawmakers, who accuse Republican leadership of using political retaliation to silence opposition voices and diminish representation for Black communities. According to Democratic lawmakers, every Democrat serving in the Tennessee House was removed from committee and subcommittee assignments after demonstrations opposing the Republican-backed redistricting plans. Critics argue the new maps dismantle Tennessee’s only majority-Black voting district and dilute the voting power of Black residents across several regions of the state. Republican leaders defended the action, arguing the protests disrupted legislative proceedings and violated House rules. Tennessee House Speaker Cameron Sexton said Democrats had been “disrupting processes” and “creating disorder” during debate and protests surrounding the controversial maps. Democratic lawmakers and voting rights advocates strongly rejected that explanation, calling the removals an act of political punishment designed to intimidate opposition and suppress dissent. State Representative Justin Pearson condemned the decision in a public statement, accusing Republican lawmakers of engaging in racial retaliation and undermining democracy. “Just as my white Republican colleagues chose racial retaliation against Tennessee’s Black voters, the Speaker of the House is now choosing retaliation against a Black lawmaker for standing up against their Jim Crow racial gerrymander,” Pearson wrote. Pearson also warned that the dispute extends beyond one lawmaker or one district, saying the fight centers on protecting the voices of thousands of Tennesseans who elected Democratic representatives to office. “This is not new,” Pearson said. “This is the same pattern of racial discrimination and authoritarian abuse we have come to expect. His assault on our democracy is not about me, but silencing the voices of the people who democratically elected me.” The controversy comes amid growing national battles over voting rights, redistricting, and representation following major changes to federal voting protections over the last decade. Civil rights groups have repeatedly warned that states across the South could pursue aggressive redistricting efforts that reduce minority voting influence after portions of the federal Voting Rights Act were weakened by court rulings. Opponents of the Tennessee maps argue the new districts fracture historically Black voting blocs and make it significantly harder for Black communities to elect candidates of their choice. Supporters of the maps maintain the districts comply with legal requirements and reflect population changes. The political clash has further deepened divisions inside Tennessee politics and intensified broader national debates over race, democracy, and voting access in America. Democratic lawmakers say they plan to continue challenging the maps and speaking out against what they describe as an attack on representative government and minority political power. “This will not deter us from the fights ahead,” Pearson said, “but instead strengthen our resolve to keep pushing.” Share this:Tweet Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window) Email Share on Threads (Opens in new window) Threads Share on Bluesky (Opens in new window) Bluesky Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window) WhatsApp Share on Nextdoor (Opens in new window) Nextdoor More Share on Reddit (Opens in new window) Reddit Like this:Like Loading… Related Post navigation National Day of Action for Voting Rights Set for Selma and Montgomery on Saturday
