Grand Bay, AL (BuzzReport)- Service along the Gulf Coast is expected to return to normal Monday morning after a dramatic early-morning collision forced a temporary shutdown of Amtrak’s Mardi Gras route between Mobile and New Orleans.

The disruption stems from a crash just before 7 a.m. Sunday at a rail crossing near Alabama 188 off U.S. 90 in Grand Bay, where an Amtrak passenger train struck a truck and trailer that had become stuck on the tracks.

Collision Details

Authorities say the truck was hauling two vans when it became immobilized on the crossing. Moments later, the Amtrak Mardi Gras service train—departing Mobile en route to New Orleans—collided with the vehicle.

The impact was strong enough to derail the front wheels of the locomotive, though the remainder of the train stayed upright. Officials confirmed the train was later backed safely toward Mobile as crews worked to stabilize the situation.

Injuries and Emergency Response

Emergency responders flooded the scene, with multiple ambulances dispatched as a precaution. Several افراد were reported injured, but officials emphasized that none of the injuries appear to be serious. No fatalities have been reported.

First responders spent hours clearing debris from the tracks and assessing damage to both the train and the crossing infrastructure.

Service Impact and Recovery

The incident prompted a temporary suspension of Amtrak’s Mardi Gras service, disrupting travel along the busy corridor. Crews worked throughout the day to reopen the line, and officials now confirm that full service is scheduled to resume Monday morning.

The crash marks yet another crossing-related incident involving the Mardi Gras route, raising renewed concerns about rail safety at highway intersections in the region.

Ongoing Investigation

Authorities are continuing to investigate how the truck became stuck on the tracks and whether any safety violations or mechanical issues contributed to the crash.
