BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (BuzzReport) — A man is dead after being shot by a security guard at the downtown Greyhound bus station in Birmingham, according to police.

Authorities say the shooting occurred following a confrontation between two individuals at the station. Investigators report that what began as an argument quickly escalated into a physical altercation, prompting a security guard to intervene. During that intervention, the guard discharged a firearm, striking one of the men.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not yet been publicly released pending notification of next of kin.

Police have not said whether the man who was shot was armed, nor have they disclosed what specific actions led the security guard to open fire. It also remains unclear if charges will be filed, as detectives continue to review evidence and interview witnesses.

The security guard involved is cooperating with investigators. Law enforcement officials indicate the case will likely be presented to prosecutors once the investigation is complete to determine whether the use of deadly force was justified under Alabama law.

The Greyhound station, located in the heart of downtown Birmingham, remained an active crime scene for several hours as officers processed evidence and canvassed the area for surveillance footage.
