CHICAGO, IL (BuzzReport)— A violent and shocking shooting inside Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital has left one Chicago police officer dead and another fighting for his life, authorities confirmed Saturday.

The shooting unfolded late Saturday morning in the Ravenswood neighborhood when two officers were escorting a suspect inside the hospital. During the encounter, the suspect—who was already in police custody—somehow obtained a weapon and opened fire on the officers at close range. 

One officer suffered fatal injuries, while the second officer was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition, officials said. 

Suspect in Custody After Chaotic Scene

After the gunfire erupted, the suspect fled the hospital, triggering an intense manhunt across the surrounding neighborhood. Law enforcement agencies quickly flooded the area, urging residents to shelter in place as officers searched for the gunman.

The suspect was later taken into custody following a swift response by police. 

Hospital Placed on Lockdown

In the immediate aftermath, Swedish Hospital was placed on lockdown as authorities secured the scene and began their investigation. Hospital officials confirmed that no patients or staff members were injured during the incident and that there is no ongoing threat inside the facility. 

Investigation Underway

Preliminary reports indicate the shooting occurred during a prisoner transport or medical evaluation, raising serious questions about how the suspect was able to access a firearm while under police supervision. 

Authorities have not yet released the identities of the officers or the suspect. Investigators are continuing to piece together the sequence of events that led to this deadly breach of security.
