Mobile, AL (BuzzReport) — A deadly shooting on Thursday afternoon has left one man dead and another behind bars following what investigators say began as a verbal dispute. According to the Mobile Police Department, officers were dispatched to the 1900 block of Roys Lane at approximately 4:49 p.m. on April 23, 2026, in reference to an assault. When officers arrived on scene, they located an adult male suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound. Emergency responders rushed the victim to a local hospital, but despite life-saving efforts, he later succumbed to his injuries. Authorities have identified the victim as Jacob Griffith, 51. Detectives investigating the incident determined that the shooting stemmed from a verbal altercation between the victim and a known male suspect. During the dispute, the suspect allegedly produced a handgun and shot Griffith, resulting in his death. Police have arrested John Howell, 46, in connection with the shooting. He was taken into custody and transported to Metro Jail, where he is expected to face charges related to the homicide. Investigators have not released additional details at this time as the case remains active.
