Washington (BuzzReport)- In a sudden leadership shift at the Pentagon, John Phelan has stepped down from his role as Secretary of the Navy, effective immediately, according to chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell.

Parnell confirmed Wednesday that Hung Cao, currently serving as Undersecretary of the Navy, will assume duties as the acting civilian leader of the department.

The abrupt departure comes at a critical moment for the Department of the Navy, which oversees both the U.S. Navy and the Marine Corps. The leadership transition unfolds as American naval forces remain heavily engaged in operations tied to the escalating conflict involving Iran.

The Navy has been playing a central strategic role in the region, contributing to maritime security operations, force projection, and ongoing military coordination. The loss of its top civilian official during such a high-stakes period raises questions about continuity in leadership and decision-making at one of the military’s most critical branches.

No immediate reason for Phelan’s departure has been publicly disclosed.

As Hung Cao steps into the acting role, attention now turns to how the Navy will maintain operational stability and leadership cohesion during a time of heightened global tension.
