SLIDELL, La. (BuzzReport) — Authorities in St. Tammany Parish have launched an investigation after skeletal human remains were discovered Monday afternoon in a retention pond near Slidell.

According to the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched around 4:00 p.m. to the area near Indiana Avenue and Highway 11 after a person fishing in the pond reported seeing what appeared to be human remains in the water.

Upon arrival, deputies secured the scene and confirmed the presence of skeletal remains. Investigators immediately notified the St. Tammany Parish Coroner’s Office, which responded alongside specialists from the LSU Forensic Anthropology and Computer Enhancement Services (FACES) Laboratory.

Officials said the FACES Lab took custody of the remains Tuesday morning and will begin the process of forensic analysis and identification. That process could involve examining bone structure, dental records, and other scientific methods to determine the identity of the individual and, if possible, the cause of death.

At this time, authorities say there are no immediate signs of foul play. However, investigators emphasized that the case remains active and ongoing as they work to piece together the circumstances surrounding the discovery.

The sheriff’s office has not released any information regarding how long the remains may have been in the water or whether they could be connected to any missing persons cases in the region.

Officials are urging anyone with information that could assist in the investigation to contact the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Further updates are expected as forensic testing progresses and more details become available.
