MOBILE, Ala. (BuzzReport) — A major milestone for Gulf Coast transportation was reached today as Amtrak officially welcomed its 100,000th rider aboard the newly launched Mardi Gras Service, connecting Mobile to New Orleans with multiple stops along the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

The celebratory moment underscores the early success of the long-anticipated passenger rail line, which has quickly become a popular travel option for residents and tourists alike. The route links key coastal communities across Mississippi, providing a convenient and scenic alternative to highway travel.

Transportation officials and local leaders say the strong ridership reflects pent-up demand for passenger rail service in the region—something that had been absent for nearly two decades prior to the line’s return.

“This milestone proves what we’ve known all along—people want reliable, accessible rail service along the Gulf Coast,” officials said during today’s announcement. “Reaching 100,000 passengers so quickly is a testament to the region’s growth and connectivity.”

The Mardi Gras Service has been praised for boosting tourism and economic activity between cities like Biloxi, Gulfport, and Pascagoula, while also giving commuters a new, stress-free travel option.

Passengers have cited comfort, affordability, and the ability to avoid Interstate 10 traffic as key reasons for choosing rail over driving. Local businesses along the route are also reporting increased foot traffic, especially during weekends and major events.

The revival of Gulf Coast passenger rail service has been years in the making, requiring coordination between federal, state, and local agencies, along with significant infrastructure investments.

As ridership continues to climb, officials say they are already exploring opportunities to expand service frequency and enhance station amenities.
