Mobile, Alabama (BuzzReport) — After a strong wave of public participation, residents of Mobile have chosen “Second Line Transit” as the new name for the city’s reimagined public transportation system, marking a significant step forward in a broader effort to modernize transit services. The naming decision followed a community survey launched in early March and led by the city’s transportation provider, Via. The initiative drew widespread engagement, with more than 2,800 votes cast. “Second Line Transit” emerged as the clear favorite, earning 1,575 votes and surpassing the alternative option, “MoGo,” which received 1,258 votes. The newly selected name reflects a deep connection to Mobile’s cultural identity, drawing inspiration from the city’s historic Mardi Gras traditions. It also signals a renewed focus on building a public transit system centered on the needs of the community, with accessibility, reliability, and connectivity at the forefront. The new brand is set to officially launch in July 2026 alongside a fully redesigned transit network. Until then, the system will continue operating under its current name, The Wave Transit System, ensuring uninterrupted service for riders as preparations move forward. The naming campaign is part of a larger initiative aimed at reshaping public transportation across the city. Through the ongoing Mobile’s Transit Future plan, Via is working closely with city leadership, including Spiro Cheriogotis, to develop a more efficient and modern system. The redesigned network is expected to integrate multiple service options, including fixed-route buses, trolleys, microtransit, and paratransit, creating a more flexible and connected experience for riders. As the transition progresses over the coming months, city officials and transit leaders continue to emphasize transparency and community involvement. Additional updates are expected as the rollout approaches, with continued efforts to ensure the new system meets the evolving needs of residents across Mobile.
