Mount Vernon, AL (BuzzReport) — A significant fire late Friday night damaged part of the historic Searcy Hospitalproperty, drawing an extensive emergency response and leaving the community mourning the loss of a piece of its history.

According to officials, the fire broke out at approximately 8:50 p.m. on the grounds of the Searcy Hospital and Mount Vernon Arsenal site. Fire crews from multiple agencies responded quickly and worked through the night to contain the blaze. All units cleared the scene around 2:30 a.m.

Authorities confirmed that one structure on the property was fully engulfed in flames and ultimately destroyed. Several nearby buildings were also impacted but sustained only limited damage due to the rapid response and coordinated efforts of firefighters.

First responders were credited with preventing the fire from spreading further across the historic grounds, which contain several aging and vulnerable structures.

Community members gathered near the scene as the fire burned, many expressing deep emotion over the damage to a site that has long held historical and cultural significance in the area.

Officials say the cause of the fire has not yet been determined, and an investigation is underway. No injuries have been reported at this time.

Local leaders and preservation advocates emphasized the importance of protecting what remains of the site, noting that the Searcy property represents a vital part of the region’s heritage.

“We are incredibly grateful for the swift and professional response from all fire departments and first responders who worked through the night,” a statement read. “Their actions helped protect surrounding structures and prevent further loss.”

As the investigation continues, authorities are urging the public to avoid the area while crews assess the damage and ensure the site is secure.

Despite the destruction, officials reaffirmed their commitment to preserving the legacy of the historic property and ensuring its story endures for future generations.
