CHOCTAW COUNTY, Ala. — A dangerous high-speed chase that stretched across multiple roadways and private property in Choctaw County ended Saturday with the arrest of a man accused of fleeing law enforcement at speeds exceeding 120 miles per hour. According to the Choctaw County Sheriff’s Office, deputies became involved after receiving a 911 call on Saturday, May 30, 2026, reporting a man who appeared to be unconscious in the roadway at the intersection of County Road 3 and Highway 84. Choctaw County EMS personnel arrived first and began assessing the individual. Authorities say the situation quickly escalated when the man became combative during their contact with him. He then entered a vehicle and drove away from the scene before law enforcement could intervene. EMS personnel reported observing the vehicle being operated recklessly, with the driver allegedly traveling at extremely high speeds, abruptly slowing down, and crossing into both lanes of traffic, creating a serious hazard for motorists. Deputies soon located the vehicle near the intersection of Highway 84 and Highway 17 and attempted to initiate a traffic stop. However, the driver refused to stop and instead fled in a silver Mercedes, triggering a pursuit. Authorities say the vehicle raced through the Dixon Tart Road area, crossed private property, and re-entered Highway 17 northbound. During the pursuit, investigators believe the Mercedes reached speeds of more than 120 miles per hour, placing both the public and responding officers at significant risk. The chase ultimately came to an end with assistance from the Gilbertown Police Department. Law enforcement officers successfully and safely stopped the vehicle just north of Toxey. The driver, identified as Gerald Henderson, was taken into custody without further incident. Henderson has been charged with Attempting to Elude Law Enforcement and Reckless Endangerment. Officials noted that additional charges could be forthcoming as the investigation remains ongoing. The Choctaw County Sheriff’s Office has not released further details regarding what may have contributed to the incident or whether any injuries were reported during the pursuit. Authorities continue to investigate the case.
