GREENSBORO, Ala. (BuzzReport) — State authorities have launched an investigation following an officer-involved shooting in Hale County that left a 64-year-old man dead and a Greensboro police officer injured Thursday evening. According to officials, Special Agents with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) began investigating the incident on April 2 at the request of the Hale County Sheriff’s Office. The shooting occurred around 7:30 p.m. in the 1000 block of Blount Street in Greensboro. Authorities say the incident began as a traffic stop conducted by an officer with the Greensboro Police Department. During the stop, the driver—identified as Robert Williams, 64, of Greensboro—allegedly produced a firearm and shot the officer. Law enforcement officials say the officer returned fire, striking Williams. Williams was transported to Hale County Hospital, where he later died from his injuries. The officer, whose name has not been released, was also injured in the exchange and taken to a local hospital for treatment. Authorities have not disclosed the extent of the officer’s injuries but confirmed he is receiving medical care. ALEA Secretary Hal Taylor addressed the incident in a statement, emphasizing the risks faced by law enforcement officers. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured Greensboro Police Officer and his family as he continues to receive care,” Taylor said. “What began as a traffic stop, which is never routine, quickly turned into a life-threatening situation, underscoring the dangers officers face every day. Incidents like this weigh heavily on the entire law enforcement community. We are praying for the Officer’s full recovery and will continue to stand alongside the family and fellow officers during this difficult time.” Authorities have not released additional details regarding the circumstances leading up to the shooting, and it remains unclear what prompted the initial traffic stop. The SBI investigation is ongoing. Once completed, the findings will be turned over to the Hale County District Attorney’s Office for review. Officials say no further information is available at this time.
