Gulfport, Mississippi (BuzzReport) — A Democratic primary victory along the Mississippi Gulf Coast is drawing renewed attention to the upcoming race for the state’s 4th Congressional District, as State Rep. Jeffrey Hulum III positions himself as a strong and serious challenger to incumbent Republican Mike Ezell in November.

Hulum, who represents District 119 in the Mississippi House of Representatives, secured the Democratic nomination decisively last week, avoiding a runoff and emerging as his party’s standard-bearer in a district that has leaned Republican in recent election cycles.

A Competitive Shift in South Mississippi

Stretching across the Gulf Coast and into parts of southern Mississippi, the 4th Congressional District has historically favored Republican candidates. However, political observers note that Hulum’s candidacy is generating increased engagement in a region where Democrats have often struggled to field high-profile challengers.

Campaigning on a message centered around economic relief, healthcare access, and government accountability, Hulum is working to energize both traditional Democratic voters and historically underrepresented groups, particularly non-voters.

“Vote the issues and not feelings, and we will win,” Hulum said during a recent interview. “When we vote, we win. When we stay home, others win. Now is not the time for disengagement.”

Campaign Themes: Economy, Healthcare, and Accountability

Hulum’s platform focuses heavily on affordability and quality of life concerns that continue to dominate national and local political discourse. Among his top priorities are lowering the cost of living, expanding access to healthcare, addressing food insecurity, and strengthening job opportunities across the region.

“We need a government that puts people first,” Hulum said. “Families should be able to earn a living wage, afford a home, and access healthcare without financial strain.”

He also emphasized the importance of addressing food deserts in rural communities and ensuring veterans receive comprehensive and reliable care—issues he says are informed by his own background as a retired U.S. Army Sergeant Major.

“I believe Americans, especially those in South Mississippi, already know what they need to build a full and successful life. They understand where their household budgets are falling short, which medications their insurance won’t cover, and what their communities are missing compared to neighboring states.

What’s lacking in our political process is honesty, transparency, and accountability. Without those, it becomes harder for people to consistently elect leaders who truly reflect their needs and lived experiences.

With so much chaos and uncertainty coming from the federal government, the country is not on the right track. But I have faith that South Mississippians know what it takes to make better choices and send strong, grounded leadership to Washington.”

A Veteran’s Path to Politics

A Gulfport native and graduate of Gulfport High School, Hulum brings more than two decades of military experience to his campaign. He served 22 years in the U.S. Army, completing six combat tours in Kosovo, Afghanistan, and Iraq, and earning the Bronze Star before retiring at the rank of Sergeant Major.

Following his military service, Hulum founded a nonprofit organization focused on assisting underserved populations across the Gulf Coast. His efforts included providing food assistance, youth programs, and critical support during the COVID-19 pandemic, when he helped coordinate the distribution of thousands of meals and essential supplies.

Elected to the state legislature in 2022, Hulum has since framed his political identity around community service and grassroots engagement. “The people are my focus, not politics,” he said.

Voter Sentiment Reflects Broader Concerns

Interviews with local residents suggest that key national issues—such as inflation, healthcare costs, and civil rights—are shaping voter attitudes ahead of the midterm election.

“Our country is facing serious challenges, and affordability is at the top of the list,” said Mary Lee, a South Mississippi resident who indicated she plans to support Democratic candidates this cycle.

Another voter, Jimmie Jones, expressed frustration with the current political climate, citing economic pressures and concerns about government priorities as motivating factors in his decision-making.

Looking Ahead to November

Hulum will face Rep. Ezell in what is expected to be a closely watched general election contest, particularly as Democrats seek to expand their competitiveness in traditionally conservative area like South Mississippi.

The outcome of the race could hinge on voter turnout, especially among those who have historically not participated in elections—a demographic Hulum’s campaign is actively targeting through outreach and grassroots organizing.

With national issues such as healthcare, economic stability, and foreign policy continuing to dominate the political landscape, both candidates are expected to intensify their messaging in the months leading up to Election Day.

Voters are encouraged to verify their registration status, confirm polling locations, and ensure they have the required photo identification ahead of the general election.
