Auburn, AL (BuzzReport) — Former Trump administration official and onetime staffer to U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville, Morgan Murphy, announced Monday that he is ending his campaign for the U.S. Senate and shifting his focus toward a potential run for Congress in Alabama.

Murphy revealed his decision in a video statement, explaining that he would step aside in the Senate race and instead work to help Republicans maintain and expand their narrow majority in the U.S. House of Representatives.

In his message, Murphy pointed to the influence of former President Donald Trump in shaping the race.

“President Trump is the leader of our party and has sacrificed more than anyone to Make America Great Again,” Murphy said. “He deserves the senator he wants in Washington, D.C.”

Murphy also emphasized the need for party unity as a reason for withdrawing from the contest, saying Republicans should avoid internal battles.

“Republicans don’t need to waste time or money fighting each other,” Murphy said while announcing his endorsement of U.S. Rep. Barry Moore (R-Enterprise) for the Senate seat. Trump endorsed Moore’s campaign earlier this year.

Despite exiting the Senate race, Murphy said he intends to remain active politically and plans to target one of Alabama’s two U.S. House seats currently held by Democrats.

“I plan to flip a blue House seat right here in ruby-red Alabama,” Murphy said.

Alabama’s two Democratic-held congressional districts are represented by U.S. Reps. Shomari Figures (D-Mobile) and Terri Sewell (D-Birmingham).

Murphy’s announcement comes as Republicans in the state are watching closely for potential changes to Alabama’s congressional maps. The issue stems from ongoing legal battles over the state’s redistricting process following the Allen v. Milligan decision, which required Alabama to create a second congressional district where Black voters have the opportunity to elect a candidate of their choice.

Some Republican leaders have signaled they could pursue new district maps if the U.S. Supreme Court ultimately rules against race-based considerations in congressional redistricting.

Murphy has not formally announced which district he plans to challenge, but recent campaign messaging and advertising referencing “Murphy for Congress” suggest preparations for a House run are already underway.
