Enterprise, AL (BuzzReport) — On what would have been Genesis Reid’s third birthday, authorities in Enterprise announced that the toddler’s mother has been formally charged with capital murder in a case that investigators say ended with the child’s body being discarded in a dumpster. Enterprise Police Chief Michael Moore confirmed Monday that Adrienne Reid has been charged with Capital Murderand Abuse of a Corpse in connection with the death of her daughter. “Through the careful and methodical work of investigators, we have reached the heartbreaking and horrific conclusion that her mother, her caretaker, the one that should have been there to keep her safe, willfully murdered Genesis and placed her in a duffle bag and discarded her in a dumpster,” Moore said during a press conference. Missing Child Report Sparked Investigation The investigation began on February 16, when Adrienne Reid contacted police and reported that her young daughter was missing from their apartment on Apache Drive in Enterprise. However, detectives soon determined that the report was false. Investigators later concluded that Genesis had not been seen since Christmas Day. Reid was arrested the following day and charged with False Reporting to Law Enforcement Authorities, a Class C felony. As the investigation progressed, authorities began uncovering evidence that suggested the child had been killed weeks earlier. Surveillance Footage Key to Case Chief Moore said detectives obtained surveillance footage from a neighboring residence that captured Adrienne Reid walking toward the apartment complex dumpster at approximately 11:30 p.m. while pulling a rolling duffle bag. Two days later, additional footage allegedly showed Reid returning to the same dumpster area carrying toys and other items believed to belong to Genesis. Investigators believe Genesis’ body was placed inside the duffle bag and disposed of in the dumpster. “Today is an especially heartbreaking day for our community,” Moore said. “The loss of a child, the most precious and innocent members of our society, is something that cannot be ignored and will never be forgotten.” Landfill Search Expected to Take Weeks Authorities believe the contents of the dumpster were collected on December 26 and transported through multiple stages of waste processing before ultimately being taken to the Coffee County Landfill. Coffee County Sheriff Scott Byrd said investigators have worked to reconstruct the path of the garbage through truck schedules, landfill records, and GPS tracking data from equipment. Officials have narrowed the potential search area to roughly 200 feet by 100 feet, buried approximately 8 to 10 feet deepin landfill refuse. Byrd warned the public that the search will be extremely complex. “I need the public to understand that this will not be an easy or fast search,” Byrd said. “The subject dumpster where the bag we are looking for was picked up on December 26. It was compacted in the truck that picked it up. It was taken to a distribution facility and compacted again. It was taken on another truck to the landfill where it was processed further with bulldozers and a compacting machine.” He said the search effort could take up to ten weeks or longer to complete. Specialized personnel from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children are assisting authorities with planning and executing the search operation. Prosecutors Considering Death Penalty Coffee County District Attorney James Tarbox said Adrienne Reid will appear before District Judge Josh Wilson later this week for an initial court appearance on the new charges. Tarbox described the evidence gathered by investigators as disturbing. “The evidence shows that Adrienne Reid killed her daughter, literally threw her in the trash, and then engaged in a 53-day campaign of deceit, lies, manipulation, and destruction of evidence before she finally reported her missing on February 16,” Tarbox said. Tarbox said prosecutors have made a preliminary decision to pursue the death penalty in the case. “Her conduct speaks for itself, and I believe this preliminary decision to seek the death penalty conforms to our community’s beliefs about this case and our shared values about how we value and seek to protect the most innocent among us, our children,” he said. Community Reacts to Tragedy Enterprise Mayor William E. Cooper called the case a devastating loss for the entire community and thanked the many agencies involved in the investigation. “From the very start, our thoughts and hearts have been with Genesis, and we have lifted up this little girl in our prayers,” Cooper said. “Now it is time to see justice done for her and to bring some measure of peace and closure to everyone who has cared so deeply.” “This is a very sad day, not just for Enterprise, but across the county, the state, and beyond,” the mayor added. Massive Multi-Agency Investigation Chief Moore praised the extraordinary effort by investigators from multiple agencies who worked tirelessly on the case. According to Moore, the investigation involved approximately 8,000 combined working hours, with officers frequently working 16 to 18 hours per day. Authorities executed 37 search warrants, pursued 97 investigative leads within the Enterprise Police Department alone, and processed more than five terabytes of digital and physical evidence. Investigators also followed leads across several states, including Illinois, Texas, Tennessee, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and throughout Alabama. At times, more than 75 law enforcement officers were actively working on the case. A Message of Faith and Remembrance Moore concluded the press conference by acknowledging that no investigation or prosecution can undo the tragedy. While the community mourns the loss of Genesis Reid, he said he finds comfort in his faith. “I believe that Genesis’s earthly body is no longer what defines her, and that she is now in a place far greater than anything this world could offer, surrounded by a love and power beyond our understanding,” Moore said. Quoting scripture, he added: “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing as search efforts begin at the landfill and the criminal case moves forward through the courts.
