New Orleans, LA (BuzzReport) — Authorities in New Orleans and the Louisiana Attorney General’s Office are investigating a racist display that appeared during the Krewe of Tucks parade on Saturday, Feb. 14, amid the city’s Mardi Gras celebrations.

The investigation was launched after videos and images circulated online showing an individual on a parade float holding dolls hanging by their necks. Officials said the imagery was deeply disturbing and sharply at odds with the inclusive, family-focused nature of Carnival events.

Footage obtained by Storyful appears to show a krewe member displaying two Black Barbie-like dolls suspended by strings of beads wrapped around their necks. City and state leaders quickly condemned the act, characterizing it as racist and intentionally intimidating.

New Orleans Mayor Helena Moreno addressed the incident in a statement shared on Instagram, calling the display “deeply offensive” and unacceptable.

City Councilman JP Morrell described the act as a targeted attempt to intimidate, emphasizing that it went far beyond protected speech.

“What is depicted isn’t free speech,” Morrell said. “It’s a disturbing effigy meant to harm and intimidate families and children.”

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill confirmed that her office has opened an investigation, labeling the display a “disgusting, vulgar, racist image.”

According to the City of New Orleans, one of the dolls was reportedly caught by a young girl watching the parade. City officials said the child and her family were later invited to meet with city leaders following the incident.

The Krewe of Tucks issued a public apology, stating that the behavior was “intolerable and completely contrary” to the organization’s values. The krewe later confirmed that two members involved in the incident have had their memberships permanently terminated.

“Let me be clear: the display is deeply offensive, unacceptable, and has no place in our city,” Moreno said. “New Orleans is built on respect, diversity, and inclusion. Our celebrations—especially those attended by children and families—should be spaces of joy and unity, not exposure to hateful or harmful imagery.”

The investigation remains ongoing.
