Montgomery, AL (BuzzReport) — Alabama’s race for lieutenant governor intensified over the weekend after former Alabama Republican Party Chairman John Wahl officially entered the contest, drawing sharp criticism from Secretary of State Wes Allen and sparking a public dispute within the state GOP.

Allen, who is also seeking the lieutenant governor’s office, released a campaign video Sunday alleging that Wahl previously voted using what Allen described as a “homemade fake ID.” The accusation immediately escalated the intra-party conflict, placing election integrity—an issue long emphasized by Republican leaders—at the center of the race.

Wahl forcefully denied the allegation, accusing Allen of engaging in personal attacks and spreading false claims for political gain.

“This is a desperate attempt to distract voters with misinformation,” Wahl said in a statement, adding that he has always complied with Alabama election laws.

Wahl officially qualified for the race late Friday afternoon, just ahead of the qualifying deadline. In accordance with Alabama Republican Party bylaws, he stepped down as state GOP chairman upon qualifying.

The allegation has drawn attention because of its potential legal implications and the broader irony noted by critics. Republican leaders in Alabama have frequently warned of voter fraud and championed strict photo identification requirements at the polls. Alabama law requires voters to present a valid photo ID before casting a ballot, with limited exceptions.

“If everyday Alabamians are required to present a valid photo ID to vote, why wouldn’t the head of the Republican Party be held to the same standard?” asked Amy Knox of Huntsville. “That’s the question voters deserve an answer to.”

Others echoed concerns about credibility and trust.

“Something is deeply wrong when politicians accuse others of criminal behavior while allegedly engaging in the same conduct,” Knox added. “This raises serious questions about who can be trusted with public office.”

At this time, no formal legal challenge or investigation related to the allegation has been announced. State election officials have not commented on whether the claim will be reviewed.

Wahl has received a high-profile endorsement from President Donald Trump in the lieutenant governor’s race, a factor expected to further intensify scrutiny as the campaign unfolds.

With qualifying complete and tensions already high, the contest is shaping up to be one of the most contentious Republican primaries in Alabama’s upcoming election cycle.
