Mobile, AL (BuzzReport) — Alabama Power customers across Alabama say they are experiencing significant increases in their monthly electric bills, raising concerns about affordability and transparency after previous statements that rates would not increase.

As inflation and cost-of-living pressures continue to affect households nationwide, many Alabama residents report difficulty managing essential expenses such as food, housing, healthcare, childcare, and utilities. Several customers say electric bills have become one of their most burdensome monthly costs.

According to complaints received by The Buzz Report, some Alabama Power customers report their electric bills have doubled in recent months, even during winter periods when electricity usage is typically lower and gas is often used for heating.

Tiara Harris of Mobile said her most recent bill increased sharply without any noticeable change in household usage. “My bill was $411.62 when it is usually around $232. We did not do anything differently. On colder days, we did not turn the heat on and stayed in one room to conserve energy,” Harris said.

Senior citizens have also reported substantial increases. Janekia Lomax said her mother’s electric bill rose from $109.13 to $346.76 within a single billing cycle.

National and State Context on Electricity Costs

Nationally, the average American household pays approximately $150 per month for electricity, though costs vary widely depending on region, household size, and energy consumption. Residential electricity prices have steadily increased over the past several years, with the national average price hovering around 17 cents per kilowatt-hour.

Consumer advocates note that Alabama consistently ranks among the states with the highest overall utility costs, when factoring in electricity, gas, and other essential services. As a result, rising energy bills can have a disproportionate impact on Alabama households, particularly low-income families and seniors on fixed incomes.

Factors Contributing to Higher Electric Bills

Energy analysts cite several factors contributing to higher electricity costs nationwide, including fuel price volatility, aging infrastructure requiring upgrades, increased demand, and weather-related stress on power grids.

In 2025, Alabama Power received approval to purchase a gas-powered electric plant, with costs expected to be passed on to customers over time. That same year, state officials announced that electric rates would not increase in 2026, a statement that has led to confusion among customers now facing higher bills.

Public Response and Regulatory Oversight

Customers across Alabama have taken to social media to share concerns and post copies of elevated electric bills, calling for greater transparency and accountability.

The Buzz Report reached out to Alabama Power for comment regarding customer concerns but did not receive a response by the time of publication.

Consumers are urged to contact the Alabama Public Service Commission with any complaints or concerns regarding their utility bills. The Commission oversees utility regulation in the state and reviews customer complaints related to billing, rates, and service practices.

As electricity costs continue to rise nationally, Alabama residents say clear communication, regulatory oversight, and consumer protections remain critical to maintaining public trust and financial stability.
