Montgomery, AL (BuzzReport) — As the 2026 Alabama Democratic primaries officially get underway, early polling shows a party coalescing around a familiar name, even as other candidates attempt to energize voters and engineer a breakthrough. Four Democrats are competing for their party’s nomination for governor: former U.S. Senator Doug Jones, businessman Will Boyd, former gubernatorial nominee Yolanda Rochelle Flowers, and activist Chad “Chig” Martin. All but Jones have previously sought the governor’s office. Jones, however, brings a unique distinction to the race—he is the only Democrat in the field to have won a statewide election in recent years, defeating former Judge Roy Moore in a historic U.S. Senate race before later losing to current Senator Tommy Tuberville, who is also expected to run for governor in 2026. A new BuzzReport poll of 706 registered Alabama voters indicates that Democratic voters are overwhelmingly consolidating behind Jones if the primary were held today. Democratic Primary Poll Results Doug Jones — 59% Will Boyd — 17% Yolanda Flowers — 9% Chad “Chig” Martin — 1% Undecided — 14% The results suggest Jones holds a commanding lead, with a clear majority of voters saying they prefer him as the Democratic nominee to face a Republican challenger in the general election. Political analysts point to Jones’ résumé as a decisive factor. In addition to his Senate victory, Jones previously served as U.S. Attorney in Birmingham and has played a significant role in fundraising for Democratic candidates and the party statewide. His experience, name recognition, and proven ability to win statewide office appear to be resonating with voters hungry for competitiveness in a deeply Republican state. However, the poll also reveals underlying tensions within the Democratic base. A combined 26% of voters expressed support for Boyd and Flowers—both of whom have strong followings among Black voters—signaling that a notable portion of the electorate remains unconvinced that Jones is the best standard-bearer for the party. Despite that skepticism, Jones’ reputation as a consensus-builder remains one of his strongest assets. Many voters described him as a unifier capable of bridging ideological and demographic divides within Alabama’s Democratic coalition. When asked which issues will matter most to them in the 2026 election, voters were clear about their priorities: Affordability — 41% Minimum Wage — 22% Healthcare — 20% Immigration Reform — 8% Something Else — 9% Cost-of-living concerns dominated the responses, underscoring the economic pressures facing Alabama families and setting the stage for affordability to be the central battleground issue in both the primary and general elections. Trouble for Tuberville; Poll shows tighter race To gauge the broader electorate, BuzzReport also surveyed 816 potential voters across party lines, asking whom they would support if the general election were held today between Democrat Doug Jones and Republican Tommy Tuberville. Tommy Tuberville — 49% Doug Jones — 40% Someone Else — 11% While Tuberville currently holds an advantage, Jones performs competitively in a state that has leaned Republican for decades. On the question of economic leadership, voters gave Jones a notable edge: Who would make Alabama more affordable as governor? Doug Jones — 41% Tommy Tuberville — 35% Not Sure/Don’t Know — 24% Voters were also sharply divided on Tuberville’s residency, an issue that has drawn increasing attention. A majority—51%—said it matters in their decision-making, while 34% said it does not, and 15% said it makes no difference. National politics also loom large over the race. When asked whether Washington politics and President Donald Trump would influence their vote in Alabama’s 2026 election, 57% of respondents said yes. “I’m ready for change in Alabama,” said Ellen James of Talladega. “Republicans have run Alabama too long now, and it’s time for something different—something that actually cares about all people in this state.” Senator Tuberville defeated Jones for his current Senate seat. A rematch in a toxic political climate may be possible for an upset in 2026. Tuberville residency will also be a factor moving forward in this heated campaign, he must convince voters that he is an Alabama resident, and not of Florida. With Democratic voters appearing eager to rally behind a candidate they believe can win statewide, Doug Jones enters the primary season as the clear favorite. Whether that momentum holds—and whether Democrats can translate it into a competitive general election—will define the months ahead. Alabama’s Democratic primaries will be held Tuesday, May 19, with polls open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Share this:Tweet Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window) Email Share on Threads (Opens in new window) Threads Share on Bluesky (Opens in new window) Bluesky Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window) WhatsApp Share on Nextdoor (Opens in new window) Nextdoor More Share on Reddit (Opens in new window) Reddit Like this:Like Loading… Related Post navigation Children Rescued After Car Catches Fire in Home Depot Parking Lot in Destin Man Found Dead on Victor Road; Mobile Police Investigating Homicide
