Montgomery, AL (BuzzReport) — President Donald Trump on Saturday formally endorsed U.S. Rep. Barry Moore in his campaign for the United States Senate, a move that could significantly reshape Alabama’s Republican primary and deepen divisions among GOP voters heading into May. Moore, who currently represents Alabama’s 1st Congressional District, is seeking to fill the Senate seat that will be vacated by Sen. Tommy Tuberville as he launches his bid for governor. Trump’s endorsement immediately elevates Moore in an already crowded Republican field and signals that loyalty to the former president remains a decisive force in Alabama politics. “Barry Moore is a good friend, fighter, and WINNER, and has my Complete and Total Endorsement to be the next United States Senator from Alabama,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “BARRY WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN.” In the same post, Trump praised Moore as someone who would “Safeguard our Elections” and “Ensure LAW AND ORDER,” while again highlighting his own electoral performance in the state. Trump claimed he received “the highest vote in [Alabama’s] history” during the 2024 presidential election. While Trump did receive more raw votes than any previous presidential candidate in Alabama, several presidents — including Franklin D. Roosevelt and Richard Nixon — secured higher percentages of the total vote. Moore quickly welcomed the endorsement, calling it a major boost to his campaign. “I am truly honored and thankful to receive the endorsement of President Donald Trump,” Moore said in a statement released to social media and the press. “President Trump has always put America First, and I’m proud to have stood with him from the very beginning. With his support, I’m ready to get to work on day one.” Moore added that he would continue to push for “Alabama values,” including border security, a strong economy, and full implementation of Trump’s America First agenda. Yet Moore is far from alone. Every major Republican candidate in the race to succeed Tuberville has aligned themselves closely with Trump, adopting his rhetoric and policy positions. In Alabama’s GOP primary, distancing oneself from Trump is widely seen as politically fatal. Republican officials privately acknowledge that breaking from Trump could invite intense backlash from the party base — and potentially cost them their political careers. As a result, policy debates have largely taken a back seat to loyalty tests. Critics argue that this dynamic has left Alabama voters with little meaningful choice. With all candidates promoting nearly identical agendas, the primary risks becoming a competition over who can demonstrate the strongest allegiance to one man rather than who can best address the state’s growing challenges. Those challenges are mounting. Alabama families continue to face rising everyday costs, while wages remain stagnant or, in some cases, are falling behind inflation. Economic pressure is being felt across rural and urban communities alike. Alabama Democrats are putting up three candidates so far to challenge the GOP nominee in November. As Trump throws his weight behind Moore, the political gamble is clear. Millions of dollars will be spent in a primary where ideological differences are minimal, and the outcome may hinge less on policy than on personal loyalty. The Alabama Republican primary is scheduled for Tuesday, May 19.
