Mobile, Ala. (BuzzReport) — The Port City Chapter of Blacks In Government welcomed hundreds of community members to its 36th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Legacy Breakfast, continuing a decades-long tradition of reflection, remembrance, and renewed commitment to justice. The event was held at Calirojae on Dauphin Island Parkway in observance of MLK Day.

For more than 30 years, the annual breakfast has served as a cornerstone of the community’s celebration of Dr. King’s life and mission. Civic leaders, educators, students, and elected officials from across the region gathered to honor his enduring legacy and reflect on the work still ahead.

Among the speakers was U.S. Congressman Shomari Figures, who underscored the continued relevance of Dr. King’s message in today’s political and social climate.

“A lot of what he spoke about, even back then, is very much so timely and applicable to what’s going on today,” Figures said. “One of the most powerful statements that he ever made was, ‘All we say to America is to be true to what you said on paper.’ Every day that we’re working in D.C. is about getting America closer to doing just that for everybody.”

Former U.S. Senator Doug Jones, now a candidate for Governor of Alabama, also attended and called the moment a critical turning point for the nation.

“This week is especially significant because it’s not only honoring the legacy of Dr. King — it’s a clarion call for action,” Jones said. “We are more a house divided than we’ve ever been. We need to return to a house with a crowded table, where there’s room for everyone — room by the fire for everyone.”

Local, county, state, and federal officials joined community members in reaffirming their commitment to Dr. King’s dream — gathering not only to remember history, but to help carry it forward.
