Washington (BuzzReport) — Alabama Senator and gubernatorial candidate Tommy Tuberville is drawing national attention after forcefully weighing in on a deadly confrontation involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers in Minnesota.

Tuberville, a Republican, voiced strong support for an ICE officer who fatally shot a civilian on Wednesday after authorities say the individual attempted to ram federal agents with a vehicle during an operation in Minneapolis. The Department of Homeland Security described the incident as a life-threatening attack on law enforcement.

“Radical Leftist RIOTERS are attacking our law enforcement officers who are just trying to keep our country safe,” Tuberville wrote in a post on social media. “To all our ICE agents in Minnesota and across the country: if you are violently attacked, SHOOT BACK.”

The remarks intensified an already heated national debate over immigration enforcement, use of force, and public safety. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey sharply criticized DHS’s account of the shooting, dismissing the department’s statement as “bull—-.”

In its official release, DHS said ICE officers were conducting “targeted operations” when demonstrators began obstructing their movements. According to the department, one individual escalated the confrontation by using her vehicle as a weapon, allegedly attempting to run over officers — an act DHS characterized as “domestic terrorism.”

“An ICE officer, fearing for his life, the lives of his fellow law enforcement, and the safety of the public, fired defensive shots,” the statement said. “He used his training and saved his own life and that of his fellow officers.”

The individual struck by gunfire was pronounced dead at the scene. DHS reported that several ICE officers were injured during the incident but are expected to make full recoveries.

Federal policy governing the use of deadly force states that officers may do so only when they have a reasonable belief that a subject poses an imminent threat of death or serious bodily harm to themselves or others. The policy further clarifies that deadly force is not authorized solely to prevent escape, except in cases where the fleeing individual poses a significant and immediate danger and such force is necessary to prevent further harm.

As investigations continue, the incident — and Tuberville’s blunt response — is likely to remain a flashpoint in ongoing political and public discourse surrounding law enforcement authority, protest activity, and immigration policy.
