Birmingham, AL (BuzzReport)- A simmering dispute between two groups escalated into fatal violence Monday evening in Southwest Birmingham, resulting in the death of one individual and sparking an active homicide investigation by the Birmingham Police Department. Authorities were first alerted around 6:55 p.m. on October 16, 2023, following a “Person Shot” call concerning the 1500 Block of Alemeda Avenue. Almost simultaneously, the city’s ShotSpotter system registered multiple rounds fired in the nearby 1100 Block of 15th Street Southwest. West Precinct officers quickly arrived on the scene, where they discovered the victim inside a vehicle, gravely injured from an apparent gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel transported the victim to UAB Hospital with life-threatening injuries, but despite medical efforts, hospital staff later pronounced the individual deceased. The preliminary findings of the ongoing investigation indicate the shooting stemmed from an ongoing argument between the two groups. Following the incident, patrol officers detained multiple individuals identified as persons of interest. These individuals were transported to BPD Headquarters, where Homicide detectives conducted interviews before their subsequent release. The Birmingham Police Department’s Homicide Unit continues to actively pursue leads in this case and is urging anyone with information to assist in the investigation.
