MOBILE, AL (BuzzReport) – A seemingly routine call for retail theft at a Mobile convenience store quickly escalated into a violent confrontation Wednesday night, culminating in the arrest of a 64-year-old man accused of spitting on a police officer. Gregory Lewis, 64, was booked into Metro Jail facing multiple charges including assault with bodily fluids, a felony, in addition to retail theft, harassment, and resisting arrest.

Mobile Police Department officers were dispatched to the Quick Stop located at 424 N. Broad Street at approximately 7:10 p.m. on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, after reports of an individual observed stealing items from the store.

Upon arrival, officers began their investigation and quickly determined the suspect had fled the immediate area. Their search led them to the vicinity of Springhill Avenue and S. Bayou Street, where they located a man matching the description.

Authorities identified the individual as Gregory Lewis. When officers attempted to detain Lewis, a brief but intense struggle ensued. According to police reports, Lewis actively resisted arrest, fighting against the officers’ efforts to gain control. During the struggle, Lewis allegedly spat directly on one of the officers before he was finally subdued and taken into custody.

“Attacks on our officers, especially involving bodily fluids, are taken extremely seriously,” stated a Mobile Police spokesperson, who wished to remain anonymous due to ongoing investigations. “It poses not only a physical threat but also health risks, and we will pursue the full extent of the law against anyone who commits such an act.”

Following his detention, Gregory Lewis was transported to Metro Jail. He faces charges of Assault with Bodily Fluids, Retail Theft of Property, Harassment, and Resisting Arrest.
