Mobile, AL (BuzzReport) – A brutal early morning incident at a Springhill Avenue convenience store has left one man hospitalized and two Mobile residents facing serious felony charges, including Second-Degree Assault and First-Degree Theft of Property.

Mobile Police Department (MPD) officers responded to the Cefco gas station located at 2704 Springhill Avenue at approximately 1:20 a.m. Saturday, September 27, following reports of a violent assault in progress.

Upon arrival, emergency responders discovered an adult male victim suffering from an injury that police confirmed was sustained by an “unknown blunt object.” The victim was transported to a local hospital, though authorities reported the injury was minor and non-life-threatening.

The scene quickly transitioned from a simple assault investigation to a major felony case as detectives determined the incident was linked to a significant theft. Due to the value of the property stolen, the charges escalated to the severe felony level of Theft of Property 1st Degree.

Swift Response Leads to Immediate Detention

MPD’s rapid deployment proved critical, as officers were able to detain several individuals at the scene almost immediately following the attack. The presence of a responding detective confirmed the gravity of the crimes committed.

Following questioning and processing, two men were formally arrested and transported to Metro Jail.

Charles Cox, 49, and Jacques Brown, 40, both of Mobile, were booked on charges related to the incident.

Cox and Brown face multiple felony counts, the most severe being Assault in the Second Degree and Theft of Property in the First Degree. Under Alabama law, a First-Degree Theft charge indicates property valued over $2,500 was taken, while Assault 2nd confirms the use of a dangerous instrument to cause physical injury.

“The combination of these charges—violent force used during the commission of a high-value theft—means these are very serious allegations,” stated a source familiar with the initial investigation. “The swift response by our patrol officers and detectives ensured these suspects were taken into custody immediately.”

Mobile Police have not yet released details regarding the specific nature of the stolen property or a motive for the attack. The identity of the victim remains protected pending the ongoing investigation.

Both Cox and Brown are currently being held at Metro Jail awaiting their initial appearance and bond hearing. MPD detectives are continuing to interview potential witnesses and review surveillance footage from the busy Springhill establishment as the case moves forward. The investigation remains active.
