MOBILE, AL (BuzzReport) – A Mobile man died Wednesday afternoon following a tense standoff with police on Bayfront Road that culminated in an officer-involved shooting. Woodrow Meservey, 49, was identified as the subject who exchanged gunfire with officers after allegedly firing shots from inside his home. The incident began at approximately 1:45 p.m. when officers responded to the 4200 block of Bayfront Road in reference to a report of a disorderly subject inside a residence. Upon their arrival, authorities say the situation escalated quickly when the male subject fired a shot out of the home. In response to the escalating threat, multiple specialized units were dispatched to the scene, including the SWAT team and the Crisis Intervention Team (CIT), along with other law enforcement personnel. Despite the presence of crisis negotiators and the deployment of resources aimed at de-escalation, the confrontation continued. According to police, the subject, later identified as Meservey, fired additional shots toward officers. It was at this point that officers returned fire, striking Meservey. He was immediately transported to a local hospital with what were described as life-threatening injuries but succumbed to them a short time later. Mobile Police Chief William Jackson expressed regret over the tragic outcome during a press conference held late Wednesday. “This is not the outcome anyone would hope for,” Chief Jackson stated. “We utilized many available resources, including our partners at AltaPointe Health and our Crisis Intervention Team on scene, but were unsuccessful in bringing the situation to a peaceful resolution.” Chief Jackson elaborated on the circumstances leading to the officer’s actions. “After more than two hours and the subject exiting the home and firing at my officers, they were left with no choice but to engage him,” he said. The incident remains an active investigation. Authorities have not released any further details at this time, including the number of shots fired by either party or the identities of the officers involved. The department is expected to provide more information as the investigation progresses.
