Mobile, AL (BuzzReport) – The race to become Mobile’s next mayor is headed for an intriguing Sept. 23 runoff, with State Representative Barbara Drummond and former Mobile County District Judge Spiro Cheriogotis emerging as the top two contenders from Tuesday’s municipal election.

According to unofficial results, Rep. Drummond secured her position as the leading vote-getter, besting Cheriogotis by more than 1,600 votes. The duo outlasted a four-way contest that also featured former Mobile Police Chief Paul Prine and Mobile County Commissioner Connie Hudson, both of whom finished in distant third and fourth places, respectively.

This outcome sets the stage for a highly anticipated showdown in Alabama’s second-largest city, marking one of the most closely watched municipal contests of the election cycle.

Rep. Drummond, who was first elected to the Alabama State House in 2014, brings a wealth of experience to her mayoral bid, including a previous tenure as the executive director of administrative services and community affairs for the City of Mobile during the Sam Jones administration. Her candidacy carries significant historical weight, as she aims to become the first Black woman elected to Mobile’s top political seat. Drummond was the only Black candidate in the mayoral race in a city with a majority Black population.

On the other side, Judge Cheriogotis, a former Mobile County District Judge, enters the runoff with a notable advantage in fundraising, having amassed a sizable campaign chest that outpaced the rest of the field. His campaign also received a significant boost in May with a key endorsement from the retiring Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson.

As the Sept. 23 runoff approaches, both candidates will intensify their efforts to sway voters and secure the leadership of Alabama’s vital coastal hub.
