Mobile, AL (BuzzReport) – A devastating incident has shaken the Mobile community, claiming the lives of two contractors working on a sewer bypass project. A third contractor, who also fell victim to the hazardous conditions, is currently receiving medical attention.

According to eyewitness accounts and official reports, the incident occurred at approximately 7:15 a.m. today on Williamstowne Curve in the Princeton Woods subdivision. The contractors, employed by the Mobile Area Water and Sewer System, were working in a 4-foot by 4-foot bypass tunnel, 30 feet beneath the surface.

Details of the incident reveal a harrowing sequence of events. The first contractor descended into the bypass and lost consciousness. A second contractor, attempting to assist his colleague, followed suit and also succumbed to the hazardous environment. A third contractor, who entered the bypass to render aid, became disoriented but managed to escape.

Officials have confirmed that insufficient oxygen levels within the bypass were the primary cause of the incident. Initially, Mobile Fire Rescue suspected a possible methane gas leak; however, Spire officials have since ruled out the presence of natural gases.

The rescue operation was swift and intense, with the last contractor exiting the bypass at 8:49 a.m. and receiving immediate medical attention. Despite the best efforts of firefighters, the first two contractors were retrieved too late, and their lives could not be saved. The second contractor was recovered at 9:51 a.m., and the first contractor was retrieved at 10:13 a.m.

The Mobile Area Water and Sewer System faces scrutiny as investigations into the incident unfold. This story is developing, and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
