Atlanta, GA (BuzzReport) – Former Georgia Lieutenant Governor Geoff Duncan has officially declared himself a Democrat, completing a political journey marked by increasing disillusionment with the Republican Party. Duncan, known for his firm opposition to Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election results, announced his new affiliation in a recent opinion piece published by the Atlantic Journal-Constitution. Duncan’s decision stems from grievances that, he indicates, developed long before former President Donald Trump’s attempts to subvert the 2020 election. He describes a gradual shift in his political convictions, asserting that his core values no longer align with the Republican platform. A cornerstone of Duncan’s realignment is his belief that the Republican Party has strayed from fundamental principles, particularly the Christian directive to “love thy neighbor.” He asserts that aligning with Democrats now positions him best to uphold this value in his daily life and political actions. The former lieutenant governor sharply criticized the GOP’s stance on social welfare and healthcare. He highlighted that 11.4% of Georgians lack health insurance, with a significant majority being working individuals struggling with affordability or eligibility. Duncan specifically decried the Medicaid coverage gap and the substantial budget cuts, totaling $911 billion over ten years, imposed by what he termed the “not so big beautiful bill,” which he argues has left state Medicaid funding in disarray. He also lamented reductions to food stamp programs. On gun policy, Duncan faulted Republicans for resisting common-sense measures like red flag laws and universal background checks for firearms, despite broad public support for such reforms. He dismissed former President Trump’s mass deportation strategies as “heartless and pointless,” underscoring his divergence on immigration as well. Duncan’s official party switch follows his expulsion from the Republican Party’s state executive committee seven months prior, a move that barred him from attending state GOP events. His decision firmly places him within the Democratic camp, marking a notable shift for a former high-ranking Republican official.
