Sparta, GA (BuzzReport) – A serious incident occurred in Sparta, Georgia, when a Walton County Sheriff’s Office inmate transport van crashed into a utility pole on Friday morning. The van, which was en route to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office detention facility, was carrying multiple inmates and a deputy. According to officials, the crash occurred around 6:40 a.m. on Highway 15, resulting in injuries to one deputy and eight inmates. The Washington County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene, providing mutual aid as requested by the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office. Emergency medical technicians (EMTs) also arrived at the scene, and the injured were transported to a local hospital for treatment. Fortunately, none of the injuries were deemed serious, and the inmates were guarded by local officials while receiving medical attention. An investigation into the crash was launched, and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has since determined that the driver fell asleep at the wheel. The GBI has confirmed that the driver is not suspected of driving under the influence. The investigation is ongoing, and further details will be released as more information becomes available.
