JACKSON, Miss. (BuzzReport) – After eight years at the helm, Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba held his final press briefing Monday, marking the official end of his tenure as the leader of Jackson, Mississippi. Standing outside the recently reopened Thalia Mara Hall, a symbol of both the city’s challenges and its perseverance, Lumumba expressed profound gratitude to the residents of Jackson for the opportunity to serve. “I am grateful to the residents of Jackson for giving me the honor to serve you,” Lumumba stated, reflecting on his service. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to make this city a better place.” Looking forward, Lumumba announced his plans to return to his legal practice and engage in consulting work, adding that he is eager to dedicate more time to his wife, Ebony, and their children. He reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to the city, stating, “I love Jackson. I will always love Jackson, and again, I am grateful for the opportunity.” While acknowledging that his administration didn’t achieve all its objectives, Lumumba expressed his belief that he is leaving the city in a stronger position than when he took office. With characteristic decisiveness, he also clarified that he does not intend to seek the mayoral seat again. The departing mayor also addressed the transition of power, revealing that he has already met with incoming Mayor John Horhn to facilitate a smooth handover. “He asked me, would I be available if he had any other questions, and I told him I would,” Lumumba said, signaling his willingness to offer continued support and guidance. John Horhn, a familiar figure in Mississippi politics, is set to be sworn in alongside members of the Jackson City Council in a ceremony scheduled for Tuesday at the Jackson Convention Center. With his deep understanding of the city and his extensive experience, Horhn is expected to build upon the foundation laid by Lumumba and address the challenges that remain in Jackson. The departure of Lumumba and the arrival of Horhn mark a significant turning point for Jackson. While Lumumba leaves behind a legacy of service and dedication, Horhn inherits both opportunities and complex issues. The city now looks ahead, anticipating a new chapter under his leadership, hoping for continued progress and positive change.
