Mobile, AL (BuzzReport) – Motorists traveling through Mobile’s iconic Bankhead and Wallace tunnels should prepare for intermittent overnight closures over the next two weeks. The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) has announced that routine inspections, mandated every two years, will take place to ensure the tunnels’ safety and reliability.

To minimize disruptions to daily commutes, the closures will occur overnight, with crews working diligently to complete the inspections within the scheduled timeframe. However, drivers are advised to plan ahead and explore alternative routes during the designated closure periods.

Bankhead Tunnel Closures

The Bankhead Tunnel will be closed on the following dates and times:

  • Tuesday, June 17: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Wednesday, June 18: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Sunday, June 22: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

During these closures, motorists can utilize I-10 and I-165 as convenient alternate routes.

Wallace Tunnel Closures

The Wallace Tunnel will experience westbound and eastbound closures on separate dates:

  • Westbound closure:
    • Monday, June 23: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
    • Tuesday, June 24: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Eastbound closure:
    • Wednesday, June 25: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
    • Thursday, June 26: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

For both westbound and eastbound closures, I-165 is recommended as an alternate route.
