Lowndes County, AL (BuzzReport) – A protracted legal dispute between the Town of Hayneville and Lowndes County Sheriff Christopher West has reached its conclusion, with a local judge dismissing all remaining charges against the Sheriff. On Friday, Judge Kameisha Logan dismissed charges of harassment and obstruction of governmental operations that were still pending against Sheriff West. This marks the second time a municipal court judge has determined that the charges against the Sheriff lacked substantial factual and legal basis. “This result reinforces what we have maintained from the beginning: the charges against Sheriff West were baseless, legally deficient, and driven by motives outside the rule of law,” stated Attorney Richard Rice, representing Sheriff West. “We are grateful that the court carefully reviewed the facts and reached a just conclusion.” The legal conflict stemmed from an argument at a county commission meeting between Sheriff West and Lowndes County Commissioner Robert Harris. The dispute arose over the proposed relocation of the Sheriff’s investigators to the former Hayneville Town Hall. During the meeting, Harris accused West of making threats towards the commissioners and disrupting their voting proceedings. Subsequently, Commissioner Harris signed a warrant for Sheriff West’s arrest, initiating what West and his legal team have characterized as a “politically motivated effort to discredit the sheriff.” The initial harassment charge against Sheriff West was dismissed on November 14th, followed by the dismissal of the obstruction charge on December 11th. Undeterred, in February of 2025, Harris sought a second warrant from a judge in a different jurisdiction. This second warrant, however, relied on the same factual allegations that had previously been deemed insufficient.
